here's a pic of Mark Ronson dj'ing last november at Love in NYC. you know... spinning on the 1's AND 2's. when did djs stop using vinyl? Ronson did have an Apple laptop on hand, but he primarily used vinyl. the first time i saw a dj with a laptop was when Dj AM did a set in NJ circa the Nicole Richie years. so i figured it was a hi-tech new age type of thing. but lately i don't see any record crates... no nothing. am i the only one a wee bit bothered by the whole MacBook dj craze? i'm not knocking it, but it doesn't feel right to me. i need a fade, a scratch--something!!
am i the only one excited to see this show? i love the master mind of RZ who's turned Nicole Richie into a style icon (although they're no longer on good terms). i like her spunk and who she wears what she likes and always makes others look fabulous. she's also a Jersey girl coming right out of Short Hills. this is definitely going to be a guilty pleasure where at the end of each episode i'll be looking at my wardrobe and saying, "DAMN!"
so i FINALLY got my hands in this long awaited issue. i've scoured all over Penn Station in NYC and Union County in NJ to find this. but on saturday my mission was accomplished. i came across Magazine Cafe in NYC when i did a search for the mag on Google. i gave them a call and they reserved not one, but two copies for pre-order. they gave me a call on friday letting me know it was there and it made my day. i even requested a Naomi cover and they had it put aside. this mag is history and as a magazine whore i just had to have it. now i know you're wondering why i bought two copies....eBay baby! *sings "imma hustler//imma imma hustler homie..."
the "Scrubs" lead actor will not be returning to the comedy series after this upcoming season.
p.s. i only felt the need to post this because whenever i catch the show it manages to get a chuckle out of me and we are both Columbia High School alumni. go Cougars!!!
here's a clip of n.3.r.d. during their set about to perform "Rockstar". i would've had more to record if i didn't get caught with my camera. they were confiscating cams there but luckily i was just given a warning when i got a tap on my shoulder and was swung the big "no, no, no" finger. *sigh* it's so nice to be a girl lol.
the show was craaaaazzzyyyy!!! i did my best to keep away from as much info about it as possible just so i could enjoy each surprise that was in store. so if you don't want to know about it, then feel free to just skip this and watch the video for a taste. for everyone else, let's proceed. the show opened with Lupe Fiasco which was a shock, but i guess it made sense. i'm sure majority of the crowd expected Rihanna to be the first to go on, but after "Umbrella"... but Lupe did his thing and got the indoor and outdoor crowd warmed up.
next to bat was n.3.r.d. seeing the trio perform was a definite treat since i've been a fan since "In Search Of" and i'm glad i got the opportunity to check them out. they had me glowing literally. all the jumping and "spazin'" had me sweating. then there was a special dude on stage spazin' to, well..."Spaz". he had on a hoodie at first and when he took it off and put his face to the video camera the projected on two huge screens, it was non other than Chris Brown. not going to lie, i felt like i was 18 years old all over again.
the group was followed by the lady of the house, ms. Rihanna. this girl is so gorgeous. i've seen her perform once when she opened for Sean Paul in NYC and that can't even compare to last night. the energy, style, and the choice to not lip-synch was very good. she also threw in some M.I.A. and Lauryn Hill tracks to mix things up a bit. but, I do have one question; now was it just me or did she not perform "Take A Bow"? i doubt i was that wrapped up in the moment to miss it, but i really don't recall hearing it.
and finally, mr. West and his spaceship Jane were out. watching his set was like being at the planetarium and following kanYe along with his portfolio of songs as the theme music. he was able to put his songs together and create a story that flowed so easily instead of just busting out tracks back to back. after performing the Grammy version of "Hey Mama" (which i felt like i was the only one who knew the song because i was the only one yelling the opening part out as he sang) he paused on stage and Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" played. i'm sure it's a part of his set, but being a Jersey resident with an auditorium of fellow NJ peeps, that was a cool touch (oh how i miss the Sopranos). kanYe's set ended with "Touch the Sky", so whoever missed Lupe before was able to catch him for about a minute for his verse.
all in all the show was awesome. when i found out about the tour i knew that i would be going one way or the other. i had great company and i was able to see acts that i always wanted to see in one night. if i could say one thing to k-weezy it would be "thank you" for all his music, imagination, even cockiness because sometimes you need that in this world to get to where you want to be. in return, i'm sure he would gladly say, "...you're welcome." ;)
ps. pix and more video will be up as the week goes on so keep checking back!!
so it's possible that i'm late on this one, but oh well.. so i came home this evening and turned on my telly and saw Queen Latifah rapping. ok nothing out of pocket there (except that she hasn't come out with a song in a minute). but then i'm looking at her clothes, then i catch the song, then i see the set she's on and then it hits me, "oh snap!", it's In Living Color!. now i know that BET runs the comedy but there's just something about it being on regular television that makes it cooler. i remember on sundays my whole family (me, my mom, my cousins, uncles, and grandma) would gather around just to watch the show. though some characters did freak me out, ie. Fire Marshall Bill, i absolutely love this show and i'm very happy that it's resurrecting itself into more homes.
ps. you know you had a crush on SW-1 and wanted to be a Fly Girl.... don't front!!!
Naughty by Nature's Treach was arrested yesterday in NJ for driving on the wrong side of the road and was found wearing a bullet proof vest. if you reside in the NJ area then you're aware that there have been many shootings going on with some of the victims being innocent bystanders. one included a student of Newark's Rutgers University where i'm currently attending. for yesterday's shooting in broad daylight Treach has been put to question as to whether he is linked to the crime or not. although a gun was not found in his Hummer and gun was found in the area where the rapper was stopped.
also today a young boy in Linden, NJ brought a gun to school and it went off in class. the madness has to stop people!
