Thrift Store Finds: Vintage Sewing Patterns and Sewing Book

Yesterday I was on the hunt for sewing patterns that involved simple dress making. Luckily, I came across a 1970 Simplicity pattern set (the black and white dresses). The set also came along with Mod-style patterns, but I don't think I will attempt to create those until I become better at sewing.
I also purchased the book "Stitch by Stitch Vol. 2," an early 1980's style guide that shows you how to crochet sweaters, sew skirts, make pillows and more. And you would think that since the book is dated so would the outfits. But funny enough they fall right into today's trends.
I'm certainly excited about this new hobby I've decided to take on and I can't wait to share my finished products with you all. Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile

Sew In Love With This Site

Last night I was looking for some vintage sewing patterns online.  I decided to go on tumblr, and after parusing the search engine, I came across Love Sewing.  It's a tumblr site dedicated to all things that involve the pretty and vintage side of sewing.  You can find pictures of clean sewing spaces, colorful buttons and threads, vintage sewing machines---OMG it's just so beautiful.  If you're into sewing, or getting into the idea, check out this site.  It's "sew" inspirational.

My tumblr is Refreshed

So after many theme changes this week, I finally got my tumblr page to a place that I love.  If you have a tumblr, you can follow me for pictures and posts that you won't find on Ramona OnSugar.  And for some fun, I try to post according to themes like Michael Jackson Mondays, Humpday Hunks, Fashion Fridays and Caturdays.

Shopping Bag Diaries: MUJI

On Monday I decided to visit the store MUJI in Times Square.  A Japanese brand/store, it caters to simple home and apparel items with good quality.  While I was there I bought the Rose Garden incense sticks. I haven't burned incense in a while, so I forgot how strong they can be.  However,  on their own, they smell so good.  But, I think next time I will opt for the rose candles or oil.  I also bought the Incense Stand to hold the sticks-- I refused to make a diy holder at home.  And lastly I purchased a cotton bud holder.  It's a simple plastic case with two compartments and a lid.  I thought it was perfect to hold cotton balls on one side and q-tips in the other.

MUJI also offers relief support for the tsunami and hurricane tragedies that have affected Japan.  You can visit the Japan Society site for more details.

Ramona Report: Vol. 2

If you're a fan of the show "Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane", then you know this man. Ed Libby, famed event planner, was spotted yesterday morning walking towards Chelsea. He had on a black suit and was chatting it up on his cell phone.  As he was on his phone, he dashed across the street to avoid an oncoming ambulance, or firetruck.  I can't fully remember but I know that there were sirens and urgency.

Libby has not only worked with Simmons, but other stars on his roster include Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, LaLa Vazquez's nuptials to Carmello Anthony, and many other celebrity events and weddings.

About an hour or so later, I also spotted Jackass star Chris Pontius walking towards Times Square with a woman.  Prior to my research, I was going to post that he was his wife, Claire Nolan, being that person he was with resembled her.  But according to reports,  Nolan has filed for divorce from the prankster a couple of weeks ago in Los Angeles.  However, they (he and whoever he was with) were just walking along and talking, and he seemed pretty calm despite what's going on.

Nailin' It: O.P.I. in Pearl of Wisdom

Yesterday I had an important appointment, so I wanted to keep my nails simple and effortless. O.P.I.'s nail polish in Pearl of Wisdom gave that look perfectly. It's a great shade that can be worn all year 'round. It can also be worn alone (I used two coats) or you can layer it over another color.

Sundance Channel's "Love Lust..." Documentaries

One evening I was tired and there was nothing on regular television, so I checked the Sundance channel's OnDemand section and came across a list of documentaries titled "Love Lust..."  There were a handful to choose from, but I decided to watch "Love Lust & The Little Black Dress."  I became interested in the doc because it chronicled the history of the LBD.  Some days later I watched "Love Lust & Heels" along with "Love Lust & Make-Up."

These docs are fun and informative because they trace the beginnings of a fashion staple, how it affected (and affects) people, and how it has transcended over the years.  And when I say that the "Love Lust..." shows give you history lessons--they give you history lessons.  If my teachers and professors passed on information the way these docs do, I would've paid more attention during history class.

In the clip above from "Love Lust & Heels," you can see how high-heeled shoes made an impact during the early 2000s through the show "Sex and the City."

ooh vs. eww: Taking a Cat For a Walk

With the weather getting a bit warmer, I've been toying with the idea of taking my cat for little walks here and there.  I've tried it before--and failed.  But this time around I've been thinking that if I train Mimi and reward her that maybe she won't get so excited every time we take it to the streets together.  However, I feel that many people frown upon people taking cats out for walks.  I mean, stray cats roam the streets, so why not have control over claimed cats?

So, what's your take on walking cats?  Ooh lala or eww lala?

Thoughts on "Coco Before Chanel"

Yesterday I finally got the opportunity to watch the French film "Coco Before Chanel."  Done entirely in French (yes there are subtitles), I found it to be less complicated than the Lifetime channel adaptation that chronicled Coco's life.  Audrey Tautou did a great job capturing the essence of the woman who went through a lot of hardships and broke a lot of boundaries.

Despite the obstacles she faced with male figures in her life and losing the only man she truly loved, Chanel still remained active in her work and went on to become one of the most famous, if not thee most famous, woman within the fashion industry. She made her own trends, opted for black instead of pink, and when women were wearing corsets and heels, she wore mens' pants and riding boots.

For anyone who hasn't seen this 2009 film and has a love for fashion, please try and see it.  You will appreciate Coco's (born Gabrielle Chanel) struggle and strength.

Album Review: Britney Spears "Femme Fatale"

Britney's new album dropped this week, and to be honest, it's not that bad.  It starts off pretty strong with "Till The World Ends" (press play above to listen to "TTWE") and from that point on, you're pretty much dancing straight through the album.  With all of the "Jersey" trends happening, and living in the Garden State myself, I've found that a lot of artists are creating songs that do nothing else but help listeners/dancers to "beat the beat."  So if that's what you're looking for, then "Femme Fatale" is for you.  Some noteworthy tracks on the album are "(Drop Dead) Beautiful," "Big Fat Bass (ft. will i am)," Trip to Your Heart," "Criminal," and "Up N' Down."  ★☆
